Easier uvw mapping?

I thought of something but don't know if its possible. I was thinking it would be way easier to model something as low poly as possible then immediately uvw map it and organize the uvw map perfectly, then subdivide the mesh manually and add more details, and that would leave the uv islands in the same place you put them but then also throw in the added details because they were divided by the bigger polygons. Can any program do this? I just tried it in max 2012, it didn't work.
