zBrush performance slowly degrading

I know this is a question I should ask on zbrushcentral, but I was afraid the response would be something like "that's a known issue with cracked versions" (I've had software that did that in the past- the crack seems to work, or the keygen or whatever, but, over time, performance slowly degrades, or {in the case of video games} the game starts glitching and crashing- all deliberately done as anti-piracy measures). So, anyhow:

Months ago, when I first installed zBrush, it ran like a champ right out of the box. As the months have passed, using the same hardware, I'm seeing issues: buttons don't update when I use a hotkey to switch between brushes or from Edit to Move, for example, and parts of the screen don't update until I mouse over them.

I've seen this issue in video tutorials, they just seem to ignore it, I always assumed it had to do with their screen capture software. I've tried messing with memory and performance settings in zBrush, and my hardware should handle what I'm doing (e.g. I open a new project, draw a polysphere and immediately have issues)- my rig is an intel quad core with 16 gigs of memory, and the only things running other than zBrush are usually a browser window.

I tried uninstalling and re-installing, that didn't change anything (but all of my old projects and settings persisted- do I need to clean something out before re-installing to get a clean install?)

The fact that it's getting worse every time I use zBrush tells me something is wrong.
