Hey guys. I'm trying to render a scene with mental ray in 3ds max 2012 and I need to render out an object separately from the rest of the scene so that I can composite it back in later. The object (A) is placed so that it is partially hidden by another object (B). I have rendered the scene with object A not visible to camera (object propertys) so that I can get a render of the rest of the scene including the shadows from object A. I then rendered the scene with all the other objects set to "not visible to camera" so that I'm just rendering object A. I also have object B visible but with a black self illuminating material applied to it so that it hides the parts of object A that need to be hidden. The problem is that because object B is now a different colour I'm getting a different colour bounce onto object A. Even if I turn off cast shadows and what not for object B so that it has no effect on A I still have the problem that there is now no colour bleed from object B's original colour.
I really I'm making sense lol.
Is there a way that I can just render object A with nothing else visible while still having object A partially occluded by object B and still have all the correct bounce lighting, shadows etc?
Hope someone cat help
